Four Cords

I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes

I really don't know when I learned "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes," or from what singers. It seems as though I've always known it, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't know it in the early or middle 1930s. I always associated the song with World War II when so many were sailing far over one sea or another, and songs of broken promises were characteristic of many country songs of that period. It wasn't until the 1950s that I began attributing the song to the Carter Family.

Would been better for us both if we'd never
In this wide wicked world never met,
For the pleasures we've both seen together,
I am sure, love, I'll never forget.

Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
Who is sailing far over the sea,
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
And I wonder if my blue eyes thinks of me.

Oh, you told me once, dear, that you loved me,
And you promised that we would never part,
But a link in the chain has been broken,
Leaving me with a sad and aching heart.

When a cold, cold grave shall enclose me,
Will you come, dear, and shed just one tear?
Will you say to the strangers all around you,
That a heart you have broken lies here?
